College Talks & Taster Days
Year 11 students are given talks by local colleges to inform and advise them of the different courses on offer and to give them an insight into college life, to help them to make the best post-16 choices. In the summer term, Year 10 students are invited to taster days at Loreto and Xaverian Colleges. This gives students the opportunity to experience a typical college day and sample some lessons. Students always comment on how useful these days are in helping them decide which college to apply for.
A Careers fair is held as part of our extensive CEIAG programme where students are able to talk to local colleges, training and apprenticeship providers so they can consider their future options. The Careers Fair includes career talks with colleges, apprenticeship and training providers, employers and professionals and exhibitions.
We have a careers section in the school library with a range of information and college/university prospectuses. There is also a careers notice board in the Science block which displays information about college open evenings and apprenticeships as well as general careers information.
The Barlow has invested in a high-quality careers information resource www.kudos-online.co.uk which gives you the chance to discover the careers that suit you by taking an online questionnaire.
At Easter time, Year 10 students are invited to take part in mock interviews. This involves local business and school partners interviewing students one-to-one as if they were being interviewed for a real job. On the day, students come into school in business dress to make the environment feel as real as possible. Organisations involved include the army, Search Recruitment, Manchester Airport and Siemens.
The school enterprise team is open to any budding entrepreneurs. It gives students the chance to experience the full process of setting up and running a business. The team often compete against other local schools in competitions with all profits the business makes going to charity.
