We are extremely proud of Declan’s exceptional performance in this year’s GCSE examinations. In addition to the increased level of challenge and academic rigour of the new 9-1 curriculum, Declan has endured complex health conditions since birth, which have led to 15 operations in his 16 years of life and consequently he has spent long periods of time in hospital during his school career. Despite all of this, Declan has shown incredible resilience, hard work and determination to achieve academic success and it has most certainly paid off with him achieving a full complement of strong GCSE passes across all his subjects with five Grade 7s, three Grade 6s and two Grade 5s.
Always up for the next challenge, alongside his school work, Declan has also made time to complete extensive fundraising for RMCH, setting up his very own ‘Declan Decathlon’ in 2013 – ten events to raise money for the charity so close to his heart. It was extremely fitting that his Decathlon culminated in May this year (the day before his first GCSE exam) when he successfully completed the Great Manchester Run. Declan and his family have raised over £22,000 for this worthy cause over the years and Declan was formally recognised for his outstanding contribution just last month when he was crowned ‘Young Fundraiser of the Year’ at the UK Fast Community and Education Award ceremony in London.
Well done Declan –we are so incredibly proud of all that you have achieved during your five years with us at the Barlow and we wish you all the very best for what we know promises to be a very bright and successful future.
‘I was determined not to let my time off for something I can’t control affect my grades so I worked hard to ensure that I got what I wanted. The Barlow staff were always extremely supportive when I was in hospital or had to have time off to attend appointments and they even had a fundraiser for me. I am really thankful to all of my teachers for all of their support and guidance during my time here.’ Declan McEntee
‘We will always be proud of Declan and all he achieves in his life, but this is the icing on the cake. He has missed so much time out of school and had to face more in his life than most, but he never gave up. It’s amazing to see how much his hard work and determination has paid off. We cannot thank The Barlow RC High school enough for all their support with Declan’s high school journey ‘. Leanne McEntee
